U12/U14 Performance 60+

IMPORTANT NOTE: This program cannot be offered unless we have a minimum of six athletes that are signed up. We will contact you to make alternate arrangements if the program cannot be run.

Ages 11 and older for 60+ days of skiing

GKHAT’s U12 and U14 programs aim to develop athletes who want to become the best skiers and ski racers they can be. We strive to provide a high standard of coaching, training opportunities, race experience, and free-skiing to fuel a love of skiing and a solid technical foundation, and to give athletes the skills they need to move on to the U16 level and beyond if the athlete so chooses.
Recognizing that individual goals may vary, we aim to offer a range of training volume to suit each athlete.

We use Alpine Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) strategy as the training standard for athletes with all levels of aspiration in skiing. For more information, see Alpine Canada at https://ltad.alpinecanada.org/

What we offer

Dry-land training is offered weekly in Golden from October on-wards. Available as an add-on for other programs but included in the Performance 60+.
Athletes will learn the basics of what dry-land training is, why it’s important, and develop physical literacy skills associated with strength and conditioning.

Performance 60+
offers over 60 days on the snow over a 21 week period. This program is for athletes who want to pursue performance in ski racing and work to be the best ski racer they can be. On snow training starts the second week of November in Sunshine and Panorama running 3 days a week on snow until December. On the weekend of December 13, the program moves to Kicking Horse and continues until mid April running three (3) days a week. In addition to on snow time, training includes pre-season dry-land in Golden, off snow sessions for individual athlete portfolio/ training plans, goal setting and check ins, video sessions, and tech talks. Coaching fees for the three (3) zone races are included with this program.

Training Camps over Christmas and March break, which are offered as add-ons for other programs, are included in the performance program. All four (two at Christmas and two in March) are included with this package.

Race events play an important role in developing confidence and love of the sport. We strive to make races fun and accessible to all, and to emphasize participation and skill development rather than podium goals as athletes develop in the sport. Below are some details about the events available to U12 and U14 athletes. Coaching fees for the three (3) zone races are included with this program.

Extra Costs that are not included are hill passes, accommodations, travel costs, and meals. We do want to encourage parents with athletes in the program to connect and work together to reduce these costs.

The intent of this program is to provide an extended training season for U12 and U14 athletes. All coaching fees are included with the program and include: 4 preseason weekends at either Panorama, Sunshine, or Kicking Horse; both Christmas Camps; both Spring Break Camps; 16 session of midweek dry-land training; four late season weekends (Friday to Sunday) between March 27 and April 12; and coaching fees for three zone races. This represents a significant savings and convenience over registering separately for these add-ons. Travel costs, race entry fees, and BC Alpine membership are not included. Two bursaries for $500 are available for athletes in this program. Award of the bursaries will be based on athlete’s commitment and financial need.

At U12 Level

At the U12 level, the LTAD model recommends 8-10 race starts (A weekend at a zone race would usually make for 4 race starts) during the season. These races may include club events, Nancy Greene events, Zone races, and Ski cross events.

Athletes have the opportunity to participate in more fun-based club events including:
  • Annual GKHAT cookie cup.
  • Annual GKHAT Nancy Greene race. U14 athletes may participates as a forerunner.
  • Annual club year-end ski-tacular event.
Additional to local events, U12 racers are encouraged to attend:
  • Away Nancy Greene races/festivals
    • These races are best suited to athletes who prefer a more fun based approach; particularly the Kimberley Nancy Greene Festival.
  • Up to three “zone races” hosted by other clubs throughout the season
    • These races are best suited to athletes who prefer a more competitive race environment and a full weekend of racing.
    • Coaching fees for zone races are included in this program.
  • Western Ski Cross Event
    • Hosted annually by different clubs, this is a full weekend introduction to ski cross, suitable to all levels of athletes and tons of fun!

At U14 Level

At the U14 level, the LTAD recommends 10-20 race starts during the season. These may include Zone races, Provincial events, and Ski Cross.

Athletes are no longer eligible to participate in Nancy Greene events but are still participants in club events:
  • Annual GKHAT cookie cup
  • Annual club year-end ski-tacular event
Additional to local events, U14 racers are encouraged to attend:
  • Up to three “zone races” hosted by other clubs throughout the season
    • These races are best suited to athletes who prefer a full weekend of away racing.
    • Coaching fees for zone races are included in this program.
  • Western Ski Cross Event
    • Hosted annually by different clubs as a full weekend introduction to ski cross, suitable for all levels of athletes and tons of fun!
  • Provincials
    • Annual U14 provincial finals for athletes who want to test their skills against the best in the province.
  • BC Winter Games (every second year)
    • Athletes must qualify as top 5 in their zone to be selected for the team (Feb 20-23, 2020).

Volunteer Requirements

Additional to standard volunteer club duties (yurt cleaning, helping at local race events), we ask our parents of older athletes to contribute to the club by:
  • Organizing/helping out at social and team building activities.
  • Filling key roles in organizing and volunteering at zone races when our club hosts.
  • Consider taking a level 1 or 2 officials course if you have a child who loves to race.
  • Volunteering at away races when help is needed.
Don’t be intimidated if you have never been involved in ski racing. There are always jobs that can be done by anyone and we believe that ski racing should be fun for the whole family! Please speak to the volunteer coordinator as early as possible if you are unable to fulfill your volunteer commitment for the season for whatever reason (volunteer.coordinator@gkhat.ca). Please see our GKHAT Parent Handbook for more details.
